Personally, I had a great time listening to this album. This guy knows exactly what he's doing. This is rock 'n' roll in its purest, most solid form. Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, Link Wray, and Screamin' Jay Hawkins are saluted from the top of the hill. This is unhinged blues. Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters, Tommy Tucker, and Jimmy Reed. Tales of hidden magic, enchanted talismans, razor-sharp guitars that leave incurable wounds, and lustful harmonicas that deliver forbidden pleasures. Some people use the term psychobilly to define a particular musical style. "Back in the Shack" is nothing of the sort. This album is the contemporary blues of an artist who doesn't shy away from the rock 'n' roll of the 1950s, the doo-wop, and the R&B that came before it. It's the work of an artist who lets you hear echoes of gospel and Delta blues throughout his songs while proudly celebrating musical roots that are simply non-negotiable. Vince Ray - guitarist, singer, songwriter, producer, comic book illustrator, cover artist (he's responsible for album covers by Bob Corritore, among many others), visual artist, set designer, and much more - has led bands such as Vincent Razorbacks and Vince Ray and the Boneshakers, while also releasing singles, EPs, and albums under the name Loser Machine. What we have here is a cultural microcosm born from a vibrant underground scene, offering every reason to discover a truly complete artist in his natural creative habitat, a world overflowing with originality, nonconformity, and an enlightened spirit of artistic progress.
