Taj Mahal, born Henry Saint Claire Frederick in New York in 1942, is undeniably a seminal figure in popular culture since the ignition in the sixties. While his roots emerge from blues music, Taj is a polycultural musician, a multi-hegemonic artist. From his prophetic imagination, he has shaped music that is as heterogeneous as it is lucidly transgressive. He has traveled the world, immersing himself in diverse musical cultures that have helped form his uniquely eclectic universe. African and Caribbean roots, along with jazz, swing, and timeless blues, have always been present in his creative memory, translating, through each of his albums, collaborations, and live performances, the most diverse and universal musical languages. At 84, Taj Mahal continues in his mission to imbue music with the essence that makes it a collective, intergenerational language.
