Japan has the blues. Bands like Bloodest Saxophone, Tokyo Blues Breakers or Tokyo Tramps, along with artists such as pioneers Kazuo Takeda and Mitsuyoshi Azuma, Kan Mikami, Keito Sato, Nakomi Tanaka, Rie Lee Kanehira, Shoji Naito, Sumito Ariyo Ariyoshi or Tomo Fujita, have shown the blues world their talent and fearlessness when it comes to embracing the devil’s music. One artist who has remained active since joining Louis Myers’ band as a guitarist in the early 1990s is Sun Kikuta (1966). He has enjoyed a steady and successful career, building a solid discography that includes fifteen albums under his own name and more than twenty as a sideman for other artists. A Chicago bluesman by choice, his first American city was Boston, where he settled in 1986 to study music professionally. He discovered B.B. King through "Live at the Regal", and three years later, he moved permanently to Chicago. That’s where his real story began. He played guitar for Junior Wells and started recording his own music. Shun Kikuta has rightfully earned his place among Chicago’s blues musicians and is one of the city’s most beloved contemporary artists.
