THE HOLMES BROTHERS DISCOGRAPHY

MC Records - 2017
Sherman Holmes (born 1939; vocals and bass), Wendell Holmes (1943–2015; vocals, guitar, and piano), and Popsy Dixon (1942–2015; vocals and drums) formed The Holmes Brothers in 1979. For years, the three musicians had been pursuing their musical careers, drawing on all their influences from blues, soul, gospel, country, and rhythm and blues. Their work became an essential part of roots music over the past five decades. Following the deaths of his brother Wendell and Popsy, Sherman launched his own project and headed into the studio with a magnificent group of musicians. The result was a wonderful album titled The Sherman Holmes Project – The Richmond Sessions (2017), released by MC Records. Gospel music has reached the present day through a variety of styles that have incorporated its melodies and harmonies. However, it is bands such as the iconic The Blind Boys of Alabama, The Staple Singers, and The Holmes Brothers that have preserved the purity of its traditional structures, even reaching pop audiences from the 1960s onward. Mavis Staples and Sherman Holmes remain active today, keeping this legacy alive. They have been joined in carrying the tradition forward with elegance and authenticity by artists and groups such as Dedicated Men of Zion, Robert Finley, Johnny Ray Daniels, Elder Jack Ward, and The Sensational Barnes Brothers, among others. Roots music has a loyal audience that understands what it listens to and values the authenticity of its performers. These listeners connect with the music's message and take an active role in keeping the tradition alive, often winning over newcomers in the process. At 87, Sherman Holmes is still here to tell this story, with a new, career-spanning album that celebrates a remarkable musical legacy.
