Born in Texas in 1964, Ruthie Foster is an intellectual of the musical arts. She illuminates her songs through intelligence and commitment, whether working in blues or folk, always from a lucid and rigorous perspective. As her work makes clear, Foster developed artistically within the tradition of African American roots music: gospel in her early years, the sounds of traditional African musical culture, the melodies of soul, and the rhythms of funk. She began her career with the release of her first album, Full Circle, in 1997. Since then, her discography—fourteen albums to date—has evolved with each release toward creative perfection and interpretive transcendence. It is a process of constant growth, supported by maturity and an ongoing engagement with modernity and originality. Artists like Ruthie Foster have helped blues music evolve into the present day through their distinctive intuitive approach: a revisionist vision of classicism grounded in respect for and loyalty to its origins. Her songs demand honesty and commitment, both from those who perform them and from those who listen. There are songs on her latest album, "Just Say Yes", that continually rouse the listener’s emotional and inner responses. They convey the intimacy and sincerity of their author, becoming anthems for a future that needs more artists like Ruthie Foster, artists who are essential and irreplaceable.
