CAROLINA CHOCOLATE DROPS

Born in North Carolina in 1971, Rhiannon Giddens (banjo, fiddle, vocals) has been an essential figure in roots folk music over the past two decades, drawing direct inspiration from country blues, jug-band sounds, and early jazz. In 2005, she met Dom Flemons, and together they founded the Carolina Chocolate Drops, bringing these musical traditions up to date and introducing audiences to a fresh, modern, revitalized sound. With the Drops, Giddens released five albums and performed for enthusiastic audiences across the United States and Europe. In 2015, she recorded her first solo album, expanding her musical horizons beyond the structures she had worked within until then and tentatively venturing into soul and R&B, enriched by her artistry and charismatic vocal power. Listening to this remarkable woman is a journey through elegance and originality, exploring the fundamental roots of African American musical culture and their enduring relevance in the 21st century. Listening to Rhiannon Giddens today means understanding the meaning and importance of the blues for those who keep its legacy alive, a genre that still holds many nuances waiting to be discovered in the modern era.
