BLUES IN SPAIN: A STORY ILLUSTRATED THROUGH 18 ALBUMS

(1989 - 2022)

CALEDONIA BLUES BAND (1986-1996)

Along with guitarist Tony De La Peña from Madrid with the Tonky Blues Band and harmonica player Vicente Zúmel in Barcelona with the Harmonica Zumel Blues Band, the Sevillian Caledonia Blues Band was the pioneering blues band in Spain, considered a true legend - they were the first Spanish blues band to play at Buddy Guy's Legends in Chicago in 1994 - they recorded five albums and gave credibility to the possibilities that this genre would have a run in their country. Since the eclosion of Caledonia BB , blues in Spain has enjoyed enviable health, with numerous bands and artists, clubs and festivals, which have placed this southern European country in one of the most dynamic on the continent in terms of blues music.

Right after the Caledonia Blues Band disbanded, Mingo Balaguer began a period of transition, continued to perform together with the guitarists Enrique Fernández and Julio Esteban in the acoustic blues band Bluesville (who did not record any album), and together with guitarist Quique Bonal formed the band Blues Machine in 1996, active for five years until they became The Blues Blasters with the renewal of two new members. With the Blasters, Mingo Balaguer made his first two week tour of live performances in the USA.

The Blues Intruders was the second great band of Mingo Balaguer. Created in 2002 together with his inseparable friend Quique Bonal, The Blues Intruders represented a step forward in the harmonica player's career, opening up to styles of blues that he had not frequented before, from the Californian jump-blues inspired by the West Coast sound to approaches to Texan blues. Although the most important thing was that he made his debut as a singer in a band for the first time. Since then, Balaguer has combined the harmonica with singing on all his albums and live performances. The Blues Intruders recorded three albums and it was on their second attempt "Fun To Visit" in 2010 that he first made contact with the legendary Mike Vernon, who produced the album, a relationship that turned into friendship and would lead to more joint blues sessions in the future.

Approaching forty years blowing the harmonica, Mingo Balaguer is still at the forefront of blues in Spain. And better than ever. The last two albums released have joined two of the most daring and genuine national blues guitarists today, Kid Carlos and Pablo Sampa, baptizing the new adventure as Blueshadow. The maturity of a musician in all his extension to give continuity to the best blues of his entire career, the solidity and professionalism of a musician who continues playing the blues because it's what he has done all his life and without which he could not go ahead.
