Michael John “Duke” Robillard (born October 4, 1948) embodies in his own figure the genres that have defined the reference point of African-American roots music since Charley Patton sang “Stone Pony Blues.” We are basically talking about the blues, but also about jazz, soul, swing, jump blues, boogie, gospel, and any other form of original musical expression that emerged in the United States during the past century.

pleasure kings era
Duke Robillard founded the seminal Roomful of Blues together with Al Copley. After eight years with the band and two albums released, he accompanied Robert Gordon and later joined, along with other members of Muddy Waters’ band, the The Legendary Blues Band. In 1980 he replaced Jimmie Vaughan in The Fabulous Thunderbirds, with whom he recorded an album. Two years later, Robillard began his solo career, first with The Pleasure Kings, releasing his first two albums. From 1988 onward, with only his own name on the covers, he went on to build a collection of thirty-five albums, in addition to appearing as a sideman or guest on more than thirty recordings by other artists. At 77 , Robillard remains a legend who is still active, recording wonderful works such as his latest album, "Blast Off".
