A century ago, in Indianapolis, blues music was continuing to sow its seeds and take deep root through the music of two bluesmen who, between 1928 and 1935, recorded a series of sides of decisive importance to the entire pre-war blues tradition. Leroy Carr and Scrapper Blackwell, pioneers in joining forces as a duo, were incisive and modern at a time when the blues was stirring up the dust of roads traveled by outcast musicians and songs that demanded the attention of men and women forced to live in exile on the margins of society. Frontman and harmonica player Christopher Wyze (Chris Wirthwein) has brought their songbook back to life. Essential songs such as "How Long, How Long Blues," "Kokomo Blues," "Naptown Blues," and "The Truth About the Thing" take us back to those years of inspiration and greatness, when being a bluesman was a matter of necessity and playing music was a vital calling. Wyze and the Tellers masterfully strike a balance between faithfulness and originality in their performances. They bring the fervor and drama of these songs into the present day without compromise, offering us their own contemporary vision of the original, authentic blues. An achievement we should admire and appreciate in all its greatness.
