The area called "Sahel" is a strip of territory in central Africa from the Atlantic Ocean to the Red Sea, occupying an area of 3,600 miles long by 700 wide. To a greater or lesser extent ten countries have territory in the Sahel, Mauritania, Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Nigeria, Chad, Sudan, Eritrea and Ethiopia. The Sahel has been a source of ethnic-political conflicts that have led it to become an area with constant struggles for territory.

MDOU MOCTAR

WHO LOSES THE ORIGIN LOSES THE IDENTITY

There is no doubt that the African continent has the widest and most inexhaustible musical wealth of the entire planet. Ancestral mixture of different ethnic groups and multi-cultures, instruments made only with what nature put in their hands, atavistic rhythms and percussions, syncopated melodies that have passed from family to family as the only oral cultural legacy. When that African tradition came to America it was still alive and its transmission evolved into African-American musical culture and blues music was a clear example. The twelve volumes of "Music from Saharan WhatsApp" released so far by Sahel Sounds are a claim for all those fans who want to go a step further and discover in the rhythms and melodies of the music of the Sahel some lost steps in the history of the blues music. The lyrics invite reflection, tell stories of struggle and losers, vindicate ancient cultures, speak of mistreatment and oblivion. But there is also room for hope and encouragement for the millions of people who live in one of the most disadvantaged areas of the African continent.
