Best blues session guitar ever? It's very difficult to say, as difficult as summarizing in a few lines the musical career of Matt "Guitar" Murphy, difficult to name all the bluesmen with whom he has played and recorded , the albums in which his guitar has been present. It was 1951 when Murphy and Junior Parker were called by Ike Turner to record with Bobby Bland in Memphis, he played for a short time with Howlin Wolf and in 1952, Memphis Slim called him to play with him, first in St. Louis and later in Chicago, a musical relationship that lasted ten years. During this time, Murphy also played with Sunnyland Slim and Billy Boy Arnold and recorded numerous sessions for Chess Records. In 1963 he became known in Europe as part of the group of bluesmen who formed that year's edition of the American Folk & Blues Festival, being the main sideman of the tour. He definitively achieved fame in the United States in the first half of the seventies when he joined James Cotton's blues band, with whom he toured several times and recorded some of the harmonica player's best albums. It was in one of those performances with Cotton that John Belushi saw him perform and decided to convince him to join the band that he was forming, together with Dan Aykroyd, and a lineup of stars temporarily released from the Stax label, The Blues Brothers Band. In 1978, the only studio album they recorded, "Briefcase Full Of Blues" was released and with which they achieved the most lucrative commercial and mass success in the history of blues and soul until then. The Blues Brothers phenomenon reached its climax when John Landis directed the film "Blues Brothers", released in 1980 with unquestionable popular success in which, in addition to the members of the band, Murphy himself and mainly Steve Cropper, Donald Dunn, Steve Jordan , Tom Malone and Lou Marini, other celebrities such as Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Ray Charles, John Lee Hooker, Pinetop Perkins or Chaka Khan among others appeared in the film. The impact of the movie made Matt Murphy a musician recognized throughout the world. After the death of John Belushi in 1982, a sequel to the film was filmed, which under the title "Blues Brothers 2000" was a commercial failure. Murphy's death in 2018 occurred during the recording sessions he was doing with drummer, producer and friend for forty years Bob Christina, who in 1967 was an original member of Roomful Of Blues alongside Duke Robillard and Al Copley and later led the group Bob Christina's Caravan, a band with alternating blues, soul and R&B musicians. Bob decided to continue with those sessions and brought together all the musicians participating in the album with the aim of making a posthumous album in memory of Matt "Guitar" Murphy and the result is this double set "True Blues Brother: The Legacy of Matt 'Guitar' Murphy", an invaluable and unprecedented work of music.
