JOHN MILLS

MARK "KAZ" KAZANOFF

ALBERT "AL" GOMEZ
John Mills, jazz, blues and rhythm&blues saxophonist is another institution in Austin (TX). Studio musician, his exquisite palate as an instrumentalist, songwriter, producer and arranger have made him, along with "Kaz" Kazanoff, the most prolific and requested saxophonist in different musical fields productions. As headliner he has released three excellently executed albums through Fable Records and for the last twenty-five years has been an essential part of The Texas Horns, not only as an instrumentalist but also assuming a leading role as arranger and composer. Professor of Jazz Studies at the University of Texas, among many others, he has worked alongside jazz musicians such as Carla Bley and Canadian trumpeter Kenny Wheeler, soul icons such as Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin, and in the segment of blues music, Dr. John or Jimmie Vaughn. With The Texas Horns, Mills has endowed all his appearances with a bonus of unconditional elegance and power, a mark of the best horn arrangements behind the best albums in recent decades.
Any blues music fan around the world knows saxophonist Mark "Kaz" Kazanoff. Born in 1949, after a season living in Chicago he settled in Austin (TX) where he became the decisive musician he has been throughout his career. With his saxophone or as a producer, his name appears in the credits of more than two hundred and fifty albums, he has toured the world integrated in bands of numerous blues and rhythm & blues artists and has been an omnipresent musician in the WC Handy / BMA since the mid nineties. Kazanoff is a supreme saxophonist, in 1997 he founded The Texas Horns, together with the baritone sax of John Mills and the trumpet of Albert "Al" Gomez, they have recorded only three albums but have become the horn section not only the most requested but also the most emblematic and powerful of the last twenty-five years. Trumpeter Wayne Jackson and saxophonist Andrew Love were The Memphis Horns, the best soul horn section ever, they were the pioneers and The Texas Horns took over. "Kaz" Kazanoff's reputation has made him a reference musician as a saxophonist, producer, arranger and promoter in the current blues scene in its most exquisite corners.
Alberto "Al" Gomez got his start with his father, Texan trombonist Adalberto Gomez, Sr.'s in the band called The Al Gomez Family. In the late seventies he was together with keyboardist Fernando Sauce Gonzalez with whom he would later join The West Side Horns, the most recognized band in which he has been member. His name is linked to numerous Texan bands like Augie Meyers, Doug Sham, The Texas Tornados, The Fabulous Texas All Stars, Los Lovely Boys, always in the San Antonio and Austin area. Recently it appears on albums by John Nemeth, Ina Forsman, Andy T-Nick Nixon or Sue Foley. Maybe he has been the most prolific musician and the one who has collaborated the most in more musical projects among the trumpeters of the last decades. Third and irreplaceable leg of The Texas Horns, Gomez has a background that has allowed him to be next to musicians like Flaco Jimenez, Andy T - Nick Nixon Band or Kim Wilson while premiering Broadway musicals or playing salsa in Latin bands. He is indisputably part of Texas blues history.
The Texas Horns have just released their third album in seven years. Short time they have to dedicate time to the studio to record their own songs. The rest is to work for other musicians and bands. Formed by Mark Kazanoff in 1997, this horn trio has become the most successful and requested section in the ambit of blues and rhthm&blues music encounters. Originally from the city of Austin, their high skills as instrumentalists, producers and arrangers mean that their mere presence in the credits of any album is a sufficient guarantee of excitement. A number with The Texas Horns has double the value.
