Roebuck "Pops" Staples patriarch of the family, formed in 1948 the group The Staples Singers with his sons Cleotha, Pervis and Mavis, she the only one alive and still active. Ynonne joined the group, definitively replacing Pervis in 1970. The Staple Singers were undoubtedly the gospel group that, coming from the tradition most deeply linked to the origins of the genre, had a majority recognition and impact in pop culture, and decisively since their appearance in 1976 in the Scorses's film The Last Waltz performing the Robertson's song "The Weight" backed by The Band. In 1953 they released the first single "Won't You Sit Down" for Vee-Jay Records. Since that year, of the almost one hundred and twenty singles they released, thirteen were with Vee-Jay, ten with Riverside, thirty-nine with Stax, thirteen with Epic and another thirteen with Warner. They also released thirty albums, during the sixties with Vee-Jay (2), Riverside (4), Epic (6) and during the seventies, their Stax era, nine with the Memphis record label. The history of The Staple Singers has not only been written through their music but also through their involvement in the fight for civil rights in the turbulent America of the sixties. Their vocal harmonies were unique and served for the global exposure of gospel music and the most decisive soul and R&B of the last century. Mavis Staples is still active today, recording and performing around the world carrying the still-lit torch of the group.
