Daughter of legendary Texas guitarist Johnny Copeland, Shemekia was born in Harlem, New York in 1979. A singer since childhood, she began performing on the club circuit with the help of her father and after his death in 1997, Shemekia took the definitive step to become a professional, signing her first contract with Alligator Records and releasing her first album, "Turn The Heat Up", in 1998. Since then, she has completed an unprecedented career, becoming the undisputed blueswoman of reference of the 20th century. Nine albums through Alligator and two through Telarc have built Shemekia's solid reputation, which would not be complete without her explosive live performances, acts of pure viscerality and deep dedication to the audience. With an inimitable vocal force, Copeland also reveals herself as an exceptional songwriter and a conclusive stage presence, elements that dispel any doubt about who is the true Queen of the Blues, legitimate heir to the throne left by Koko Taylor. His latest work, "Blame It On It", is among his best, an explicit presentation of what contemporary blues means without excuses.
