Blues music definitively settled in Spain in the 1980s. The first blues band to release an album was the Dolphin Blues Band, with "Papa Blues" (1985), featuring the collaboration of Little Willie Littlefield. At the same time, other true pioneers of the genre were emerging in the country. In Madrid, the Tonky Blues Band, led by guitarist Tonky de la Peña and harmonica player Ñaco Goñi, released "Blues Corner" (1987). In Seville, the Caledonia Blues Band, fronted by guitarist Lolo Ortega and harmonica player Mingo Balaguer, released "Just Rhythm & Blues" (1989), and in Barcelona, another harmonica player, Vicente Zumel, emerged with the Harmonica Zumel Blues Band and released "Stratto Blues" (1988). The seed had been planted, and blues music began to roll in Spain. One of the pioneering clubs was La Gatera in the town of Donosti, which, after years of hosting all these bands and musicians live, with Jon Gurrutxaga and Santi Parra at the helm, played a decisive role in promoting blues music and projecting many musicians. Twenty-five years after La Gatera closed, the persistent Gurrutxaga decided to gather old friends from the club to record a new album. Led by harmonica legend Ñaco Goñi, La Blues Company is formed by guitarists Fernando Beiztegui and Edu Manazas, keyboardist Paul San Martin, and drummer Martí Elías. This album is a celebration of the reunion of dear friends in the studio, a group of the most respected and veteran blues musicians in Spain, who offer an exquisite blues album, with overwhelming professionalism and a complicity among them that is crucial to engaging the listener. A ten out of ten.
