FreeWorld was originally formed in Memphis in 1987 by sax player Dr. Herman Green and bass player Richard Cushing.

FreeWorld emerged on the Memphis music scene in 1987. Well known on Beale Street, saxophonist Dr. Harman W. Green and multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger, and producer Richard Cushing shaped a musical family that has been growing and evolving for almost forty years, following the compass heading that shows the way to purify the rhythms of Southern funky and soul in its most strict and pleasing sense. Following paths laid down by the soul of Booker T. & The MG's in Memphis and the wilder funk of The Meters in New Orleans, this band has evolved with each album, towards a free and uninhibited approach to making music, with a solid and effective rhythm section full of dynamism, alongside a horn section that stands out as essential to the band's context. FreeWorld applies the highest standards to interpreting these songs; it's black music adapted to modern times, performed by musicians with the experience needed to present a truly luxurious product, and the curiosity essential to finding ideas where no one has looked before. Their performances are an inexhaustible source of visceral music, not only from soul and funk but also from the disciplined sides of reggae, hip-hop, jazz, blues and gospel, the perfection of Steely Dan, or the genius of Frank Zappa.
On their latest album "More Love," FreeWorld has taken their approach to the extreme and recorded an extraordinary album, the best contemporary Black roots music.
"More Love" is inspired by the memory of
DR. HARMAN W. GREEN (1930-2020)
