The Burnside saga has its own chapter in the history of Mississippi blues. R.L. Burnside, the head of the family, along with Fred McDowell and Junior Kimbrough, was a pioneer of Hill Country Blues, a style characterized by constant syncopated guitar riffs and repetitive percussion with emphatic beats, which developed in the mountains of northern Mississippi in the early 1960s. R.L. had nine children, of whom Duwayne and Garry have continued the family's musical legacy, as well as his grandchildren Cedric, Kent, and Cody. Cedric Burnside, born in 1978, is a singer, guitarist, drummer and songwriter, he began playing drums early in his career with R.L.'s band. and in 2006 joined Lightnin' Malcolm, with whom he toured and recorded two albums. Later, together with Cody and his uncle Garry, he formed The Cedric Burnside Project and released the album "The Way I Am" in 2011. The following year, he joined guitarist Bernard Allison on the album "Allison Burnside Express." As a drummer, he has won the BMA for Best Instrumentalist eight times, Best Artist Debut in 2009 for "2 Man Wrecking Crew," and Traditional Blues Album in 2016 for "Descendants of Hill Country." At 46 , Cedric Burnside is the greatest living asset of a blues style that is still present in the music's collective consciousness and, more importantly, continues to resonate in the souls of its fans
