A true bluesman. Brother of a legend. Known to blues fans around the world, from America to Australia, Europe and Asia. Born in Gilmer (TX) in 1939, bassist and singer Benny Turner offers us the privilege of still being active and at eighty-four he gives us one more opportunity with "BT", a lesson in musical sobriety in a conclusive version of elegance and honesty. Since the family moved to Chicago in the early fifties, Turner has been present in the blues scene, playing in his brother band, the legend Freddie King, and after his early death, with the Chicago master Mighty Joe Young. In the mid-nineties, he met Marva Wright in New Orleans and became her bassist and band leader until Marva's death in 2010. Initially as a guitarist, he has been a sixty-year musical career as a bassist always serving with the best bluesmen, in the most select clubs and the most multitudinous festivals. Benny Turner is a king without a crown, a legendary survivor.
SURVIVOR
THE BENNY TURNER STORY
An oral history of blues legend Benny Turner, from his birth and early childhood in Gilmer, TX to the family's move to Chicago, IL and the ultimate birth of his career in the gospel, R&B and blues genres. Surviving extreme poverty in East Texas followed by the shocking transition to urban life in Chicago and then the untimely death of his big brother, bandmate and best friend Freddie King, that is only a portion of the obstacles Benny has survived. This story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and Benny's personal and professional triumphs along the way.
