FUNKY HURRICANE

DRIVING THE MUSICAL LIFE AND CULTURE OF

NEW ORLEANS

The state of Louisiana and the city of New Orleans are the main focus that has illuminated black music throughout the country, have in their tradition that musical heritage as the main contribution to African-American culture. Jazz was born there, it contributed seminal figures to the blues, rock&roll and soul had their most swampy face and funk music began to sound when nobody could yet imagine it. Naming the protagonists of such musical outbreaks would be a job for a musicologist, but Louisiana has also given music artists who have remained on the other side of success and recognition, having been irreplaceable figures in the evolution of its music and also in the careers of other successful artists. One of these is undoubtedly Ernie Vincent. Born in 1940, he is not only a composer, guitarist and singer but also an exceptional producer and arranger. On the scene since the mid-sixties, Vincent led The Top Notes with whom he achieved some success with the song "Dap Walk" in 1972, but his greatest contribution was associated with legends such as Joe Tex, Solomon Burke, The Golden Eagles, Ernie-K- Doe, Eddie Bo or ZZ Hill to name just a few. In 2012, Ernie Vincent was honored and inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall Of Fame showing that Rhythm&Bues, blues music and especially Louisiana funk will always have an outstanding debt with this great and esential artist.
