In the beginning, David K. Mathew (Berkeley, CA, 1959) fertilized the idea of "Fantasy Vocal Sessions" to carry it out together with Etta James with the purpose of celebrating and paying tribute to the Rhytm&Blues that both had shared during the last twenty years Unfortunately, Etta's unexpected death at the age of 73 made Mathew rethink the project, but in no case abandon it. His efforts were translated in 2011 with the release of the first of the volumes dedicated to songs considered standards of the American songbook. Performed with the idea of the old format of a small jazz combo, in which musicians such as Steve Miller or Maria Muldaur participated, as well as jazz musicians such as the sax from Wayne de Silva, drummer Akira Tana or bassist Peter Barshay. Two years later, in 2020, he released "Fantasy Vocal Sessions Vol.2 - Soul, Pop & R&B", a collection of songs defined by the soul of icons such as Ray Charles, James Brown, Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway. This third work, "Fantasy Vocal Sessions - Blues & Ballads" closes a trilogy that Mathews wanted to commemorate his fifty years on the road since he started as a musician in 1975, the musicians with whom he has shared the trip, the music that has inspired him and the joy of having your soul intact until today.

musician in 1982 when he joined the iconic Oakland Bay Area Funk and Soul band Tower Of Power, replacing original keyboardist Chester Thompson, remaining in the band for two years. From then until 1988 when Etta James chose him as keyboardist for her band, in which he spent twenty years until the end of Etta's career, Mathews had a professional journey within the reach of few. As a session or live touring musician he has been alongside, among many others, Wayne Shorter, John McLaughlin, Pee Wee Ellis, Otis Rush, Maria Muldaur, Boz Scaggs, Albert Collins, Ruben Blades or the French flamenco-rumba combo The Gypsy Kings. There is no doubt that Mathews' eclectic character as a musician, his versatility and empathy as additives to his genius as a keyboardist have made this artist an inexhaustible source of wonderful musical works of incomparable interpretive ductility.
Since 2010, David K. Mathews is the keyboardist in the band Santana, with whom he has toured every since and has recorded four studio albums to date.
"Fantasy Vocal Session Vo. 3" is not the end of the series, Mathews already has a fourth volume underway in which he will deal with Afro-Cuban and Brazilian music.
